||Welby Colyer letter (Dr. Welby A Colyer)|
Dr. Welby Colyer says in letter dated sometime near his death in 1940, that he knew most of the children of John Colyer 1781, his grandfather, except oldest William. Says that John Colyer, his grandfather, first wife was Martha Minus.
- John Parsons was the source of the information that John Colyer of 1781 first wife was named Martha Minus. I have not been able to verify the source of this info. The only source I have found stating this is a LDS record found on LDS compact disk #117 PIN#719024. the familysearch.org site does not reveal the documentation support. However, a letter from a Dr. Welby Colyer dated about 1940 found on this site, also states that first wife was named Martha Minus.
I believe it is suspect, since the obituary for son Charles Granade Colyer found on this site states that the first wife was a Ms. Sinclair. This is a family name and found in the area of Washington county VA & TN where John Colyer of 1781 migrated from.
8/24/13 this researcher discovered marriage record in Pulaski County Ky that John Colyer married Polly Blevins 08/29/1806. Further analysis of tax records of Pulaski County Ky 1806 shows 2 John Colyer's in Pulaski County. Therefore, to prove first wife of John Colyer born 1781 is Polly Blevins, the other must be eliminated. see research under JOHN COLYER 1781 on Blevins. There was a John Colyer temporary in Pulaski Count that Married a Polly Blevins and later moved and died in Louisville Ky. So the Blevins marriage is not of John Colyer born 1781 who died in Pulaski County.
it is concluded that some info in Dr. Welby Colyer letter of 1940 was in error like his error on who the father of John Colyer 1781 was....he said it was Daniel Colyer.....when it really was William Colyer proved by deeds of John Colyer 1781.
Is it possible that John Colyer 1781 first wife went by the first name of Polly ? This could be supported IF the John Colyer born 1815 of Bronston was in fact John's 1781 son, since John Colyer born 1815 death record in Pulaski Cty states mother was named Polly. October 21, 2016 testing results of Y-DNA samples of a descendant of John Colyer 1815 were completed. They show a match on 110 out of 111 Y-DNA markers so within 5 generations ( ie. circa 1800) to a known descendant of John Colyer born 1781. Since the county death record of John Colyer born 1815 shows that his mother's name was Polly, it is concluded based on DNA evidence that the first wife of John Colyer was NOT Martha Minus, but RATHER Polly with unknown last name. The John Colyer 1815 death record does not reveal mother last name. The Somerset Republican newspaper obituary of a son of John Colyer 1781 says his first wife was a Miss Sinclair. Therefore this researcher concludes John Colyer 1781 first wife was named POLLY SINCLAIR.
