Jewelry lady
A picture of Mrs. Frank Sokolik of Chicago and a story of a display of her modern jewelry at the Louisville Library?s Junior Art Gallery were carried in Tuesday?s Louisville Times.
Mrs. Sokolik before her marriage was Miss Lera Colyer of Somerset. She is a sister of Mrs. Henry Parsons and was born and raised here.

Lera Colyer In Chicago A MARY NAY, head of the Art Center, has been visiting in Chicago with Lera Colyer who used to share her apartment on Fourth Street At a squint, you could see the artists' touch around the place Mary's and Lera's paintings, plastic tables and lamp shades made by Lera, some beautiful pieces of driftwood that they picked up on the river bank and painted. Lera's move to Chicago is only temporary and the apartment is still her home base. She is studying painting at the Chicago Institute of Design. At the same time, she's doing her Louisville job by remote control, designing vanities. For quite some time, Lera has been famous here for her jewelry.

inventive Designer Lera Colyer's exhibition of her paintings, jewelry and creations in plastics at the Little Gallery, which closed last week, proved her an inventive designer. Born in Somerset, Ky., she got her first art training with Paul Plaschke, then of Louisville, now of Chicago. Plaschke is a hard-hitting cartoonist but also a solid, conservative painter of the realistic school. Combining extremes, Lera Colyer, after some study at the Louisville Art Center, continued her art studies in Chicago with the late Moholy-Nagy at the ultra-modern Institute of Design in Chicago. Her present work shows no trace of Plaschke, but many traces of Moholy-Nagy's ingenious use of new materials and new visual grammar. From Moholy-Nagy she learned the exactitude of constructivistic techniques, the precise operation of all pictorial elements in abstract compositions. Her painting, although always inventive, does not strike me as the most important part of her work. Where the skill of particular crafts is involved, as in her jewelry and work in plastics, she produces her best work. Miss Colyer shares a studio with Mary Spencer Nay, who had been her first teacher at the Art Center. Miss Colyer makes a living as a designer of compacts for a Louisville company, combining her free art work with applied work in product design and design for silk-screen printing.

- Email from Lazlo Maholy Nagy daugher, Hattula:
Dear Mr. Curtis,
thank you so much for the link to Google Photos, which has information about Lera Colyer. I actually met her at a gathering at Ray Pearson?s home in Chicago in the early 1980s. After she passed away the executor of her estate very kindly send me the dinner party photograph and I was able to identify most of the people on it.
Are you researching for a project on Lera?
best regards,
Hattula
