• Notes

  William as father of John Lewis(1777) is attributed based on circumstantial evidence. It has long been reported that John Lewis of Pulaski County KY had come from Stokes County NC. It was also reported that John was married to Nancy Heath. The Heath family inter-married further as shown by 1820 and 1820 Pulaski County KY records. Sureties in these marriages are John Lewis and William and Richard Heath. The 1780-1790 records of Stokes County NC show earliest census records with the Lewis and Heath Families there nearby. There are two people listed on early tax records and census of Stokes County NC as William Lewis and James Lewis. Although some have reported this James to be the eldest son of William, that has not been proven. It could have been a brother. A last will of William Lewis in Stokes County NC shows all his childrens names, including a John. Based on this and the Heath family connection between Stokes County and Pulaski County, we attribute William as father.
